We are really lucky in that we can choose to build relationships, friendships and the community around us, as we pursue our goals and passions in life, which I think is a key step in choosing to be happy 🙂

I think the word, happy, is incredibly vague. Because I know when I feel happy…is typically when I feel most myself. And this is typically when I’m doing creative work or working out, doing sports or some type of purposeful work…
So maybe the right word is “fulfilled” (?), but I definitely wouldn’t describe the resultant emotion when I’m freediving, writing, drawing, studying, you name it, as happy… When I’m doing these things it’s more a lack of feeling at all! Like a flow state where you lose the sense of where you are, where time goes by in the blink of an eye…
I’m thinking that happiness encompasses this feeling of ‘lack of feeling’ as well as other emotions, such as fulfillment, awe, excitement, fun, inner harmony and peace.
Now if we take that all-encompassing definition of ‘happy’ and if we want to BE HAPPY, then I think it isn’t just about persueing the things you’re passionate about…but it’s also so much about all the awesome people you meet in the process!
I find that more than anything else, more than money, or anything money can buy, more than trips, accomplishments, and anything else, that it’s the close friendships, relationships with family and the community around us, that keeps us happy in the long-run.
So I’ve pursued a lot of different adventures, from climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, to freediving over 80 meters deep, to trekking the deep desert of the Sinai, among various other projects around the world, and although every adventure was just epic in itself, and in the moment, learning so much about myself and other cultures and the natural world… BUT REALLY the absolute BEST part about every single adventure, was the amazing people that I got to know. My friends from around the globe, the freediving community, the friends I made at work, every person has helped me in one way or another to weather some storms in life, and to delay the mental and physical declines when things got tough.
It’s the relationships and community around me wherever I go, that helps me the most, to live a healthier and happier life.
So I think we’re really lucky, that we can CHOOSE to build friendships, relationships and community around us, as we pursue our goals and passions in life which I think is a key step in choosing to be happy.
